FAQ

Convicted — your questions answered

In short: Questions and answers about Convicted, the coming Escape This prison-break escape room: Wattle Hill, the Warden and the letter, what’s confirmed, what isn’t, and how to hear when it opens.

The breakout

What kind of game is Convicted?

Convicted is a prison-break adventure escape room announced by Escape This. Your team plays inmates wrongly locked up for murder who escape their cell at night to reach the Warden’s office and find a letter proving the conviction was rigged. Its venue and opening date are yet to be confirmed.

Is Convicted scary, or more of a caper?

Convicted is billed as an adventure, not a horror room. The tension comes from sneaking through a maximum-security prison against the clock, not from jump scares. Escape This will publish age guidance for Convicted before tickets go on sale.

What’s the goal once you’re inside Convicted?

In Convicted you need to get out of your cell, make your way through the prison to the Warden’s office and track down the letter signed by the lead witness from your trial, all before the guards come back on their rounds.

What’s in the letter on the Warden’s desk?

That’s the mystery at the heart of Convicted. All you glimpsed while serving the Warden lunch was your own name and the signature of the lead witness whose evidence sent you down. Prove what it says and your conviction could be overturned.

Are the players actually guilty in Convicted?

No. In Convicted you play someone sentenced to thirty years to life for a murder they didn’t commit. The breakout isn’t about running away; it’s about getting hold of the evidence that shows you were framed.

Wattle Hill & the Warden

What is Wattle Hill State Prison?

Wattle Hill State Prison is the maximum-security jail where Convicted is set. Inmates there fill their days with yard laps, kitchen duty and the odd hour in the library, and the corridors are patrolled by guards on a strict schedule.

Is Wattle Hill a real Australian prison?

No. Wattle Hill State Prison was invented for Convicted. Its name has an Australian ring to it, but it isn’t based on any real correctional centre, and its Warden and inmates are fictional characters.

Who is the Warden in Convicted?

The Prison Warden runs Wattle Hill and is the closest thing Convicted has to a villain. A letter on his desk links him to the lead witness from your murder trial, which suggests he has a stake in keeping you behind bars.

Who framed you in Convicted?

Convicted points the finger at the lead witness, whose sworn evidence won the jury over, and at the Warden, who is quietly corresponding with that witness. Working out exactly how the two are connected is part of the breakout.

Is Convicted like a prison-break film?

Convicted borrows the feel of a classic jailbreak movie: an innocent inmate, a crooked authority figure and an escape planned under the guards’ noses. The story itself is original to Escape This rather than based on any film or series.

Opening & bookings

When will Convicted open?

No opening date has been confirmed for Convicted. Escape This has announced the room as coming soon, and this site will publish the date the moment it’s locked in.

Which city will get Convicted?

Escape This hasn’t confirmed a venue for Convicted. An earlier Escape This page pointed to Perth, but plans can shift, so treat that as unconfirmed. Escape This currently runs rooms in Perth, Sydney and Melbourne.

What will a ticket to Convicted cost?

Convicted’s ticket prices haven’t been announced. Escape This sets prices per room and city, so expect them to be published alongside the venue and opening date.

Are the details of Convicted final?

No. Convicted hasn’t opened, so its venue, group size, age guidance and difficulty could all change. This site separates what Escape This has confirmed from what’s still pending so nothing here goes stale.

Who it’s for

Will Convicted be hard to escape?

Convicted’s difficulty rating hasn’t been published yet. Escape This rates each room once it’s built and playtested, so the official score for Convicted will arrive with its launch details.

Who is Convicted made for?

Convicted suits anyone who loves a jailbreak yarn or a good whodunnit: teams who like a story with a crooked official to expose, fans of courtroom and prison dramas, and regulars who have played the Escape This rooms already open.

Inside rules

Can we turn up to Convicted in prison stripes?

Escape This has welcomed costumes in the past, and black-and-white stripes would suit Convicted perfectly. Just wear closed shoes and clothes you can move in, as you would for any Escape This room.

Can an inmate sneak a mobile into Convicted?

Probably not. Escape This asks players to leave phones, smartwatches and cameras in a locker before a game, and Convicted is expected to follow the same rule. Final house rules will come with the booking page.

Who’s making it

Who is making Convicted?

Convicted is an Escape This production, written, designed and built by the company’s own team rather than bought in. Escape This is Australia’s largest escape room operator, with its own escape room design studio and escape room factory.

What goes into building a room like Convicted?

Rooms like Convicted come together in the Escape This workshop, where story writers, puzzle designers, carpenters, scenic painters and prop makers turn a premise into a physical set: in this case, a cell block, a corridor and a Warden’s office.
